Local act The Necks are one of the most distinctive groups in modern music. For 25 years they have been improvising every note they play live, using only piano, double-bass and drums. FBi’s a tad too small to fit a grand piano in the door, for a full performance by the trio, so we went for the next best option. On the occasion of Sydney’s Mardi Gras, drummer Tony Buck performed a half hour piece on electric guitar and percussion – over a recording he’d made of walking through the snow in Berlin, then making a cuppa in his apartment.

It illuminates the frankly miraculous methods by which the band communicate and grow – providing a rare insight into the mysterious world of these globally renowned Australian artists.
